Maintaining a strong in-house knowledge of software licence terms is recommended by both the ISO SAM Standard and ITIL SAM best practice guidelines and it is essential to an organisations ability to proactively and effectively;

  • Make strategic and informed licensing decisions.
  • Optimise spend by knowing what licences you need, the quantities you require and the reasons why you need them.
  • Maximise ROI by being aware of all the rights and benefits your licences provide and making intelligent use of existing licences.
  • Identify and mitigate compliance risks and avoid the common mistakes that expose organisations to licence deficiencies.

The simplest deployment, configuration or architecture change to your computing environment can result in additional licensing requirements and quickly expose your organisation to legal and financial compliance risks. On the other hand, simple configuration changes and server consolidations can also reduce your ongoing licensing costs and reduce your risk exposure, often without having to spend a cent.

It is essential that everyone who plays a role in the deployment and configuration of your Microsoft software environment has a sound knowledge of software licence terms to ensure costly mistakes aren’t made and to ensure your environment can be configured in a manner which optimises your licensing requirements.

It is essential that your SAM team has a complete understanding of the numerous purchasing options which are available as well as the advantages, disadvantages and implications of each of those options.

This knowledge will help ensure the most cost effective licensing decisions are made and that the right types of licenses are acquired in the right quantities to ensure compliance without overspending.

The terminology, licensing concepts and licence terms learned will also help streamline future communications and negotiations with both your reseller and Microsoft.
